Lendlease — Aurora Village (Mural)

About the Project

Commissioned by Lendlease, the Aurora Village Mural was created as a permanent public artwork for the Sales and Information Centre at Aurora Village in Melbourne’s north.

The mural weaves together cultural stories, longlines, and personal connections to place, representing both the natural environment and cultural identity of the area. It features Wollert — the possum in Woi Wurrung — alongside native flora and fauna, night skies, and a stylised Aurora Australis, paying tribute to the community’s deep ties with the local landscape.

Through layered imagery and contemporary design, the mural reflects the ongoing relationship between people, place, and environment, creating a vibrant visual landmark for the growing Aurora community.

Creative Process

Developed through extensive cultural research, consultation, and design experimentation, the mural combines hand-drawn illustration, digital composition, and textured layering techniques.

Each element was designed to capture the movement of Country — wind, trees, and animal life — blending traditional motifs with modern aesthetics.
The final work was printed and installed across architectural panels, transforming the site into a welcoming and culturally grounded space that acknowledges Wurundjeri Country and the community’s shared future.

From the Artist — Daen Sansbury-Smith (Adjadura Studio)

This mural is about honouring place — not just geographically, but spiritually and socially. Every element in the design represents the connection between community, culture, and nature.

Through the Wollert (possum), the longlines, and the rising Aurora, I wanted to create a work that reflects both movement and belonging — a reminder that stories live in the land and continue to guide how we build and live today.

For me, public art like this becomes a meeting point where design, storytelling, and architecture come together to celebrate identity and connection to Country.
